“When you’re born into a town that’s cloaked in a smog of apathy, your dreams get laminated - you can look, but not touch.”
In 2008, Shooting Fish toured the country with Laminated,Darren Bolton’s latest new writing play that explores our understanding of our own failures and the difficulty of facing this truth. The production was well received, and sold out in 4 of the 10 venues.Laminated tells the story of Charlie, a failed writer coming to terms with the end of his career. Packing up to leave his home, he begins to reconstruct his memories to create a past he can accept. Rummaging through these memories and unfinished stories, he is overwhelmed by the growing presence of an ex lover, who confronts him with a truth he never expected.
Laminated is an imaginative and beautifully visual piece, using puppetry and physical theatre to bring life to the stories and memories of Charlie’s world. It asks us to consider the reality of chasing our dreams, and all the things in life that we can see, but not touch.

Laminated at the Dance Studio, Leeds
Laminated at the Carriageworks, Leeds
In early January we took Laminated to Leeds, working with Robert Tygner at the Carriageworks to develop the puppetry and fantastical elements of the script. Robert used object manipulation and puppetry to explore the line between what is real and what is part of the story woven for us onstage. For more info on the Carriageworks click here
The first week of development took place at Bradford's Theatre in the Mill and focussed on exploring the relationship between Charlie and Katie and how this develops throughout the production. Director Aaron Paterson worked with Johnny Vivash and Emily Bignell to examine the moments of decay and despair in their partnership, and the nature of blame and excuses in denying your own failures. The production gave Darren the space to consider how this relationship unfolds on stage and how it leads to it’s inevitable outcome. The development continues in further weeks.
